Vegan Sweet and Sour Tofu

When I published this on Instagram, I had over 150 saves in less than 5 hours. You guys loved it and it takes less than 5 minutes to make so I hope you enjoy. Sweet and Sour is my favourite go to for takeaways and if it’s on a menu, I’m getting it but it’s ridiculously easy to make yourself with very simple ingredients. This serves two with rice but if you want to double up for a larger meal, simply double the ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 1 Tofu block

  • 2 tbsp Ketchup

  • 2 tbsp Rice Wine

  • 1 tbsp Brown Sugar

  • 3 tbsp Apple Sauce

  • 2 tbsp Soy Sauce

  • 50 ml Orange Juice

  • 2 tbsp Maple Syrup

  • 1 tsp Cornflour (for the sauce)

  • 3 tsp Cornflour (for the tofu)

  • 1/2 tsp ginger powder, 1/2 tsp garlic powder and 1/2 tsp lemon pepper (for the tofu).

Method

  1. Chop your tofu into bite sized pieces and place into a bowl. Cover with your cornflour and your seasoning and mix thoroughly.

  2. In a pan add your ketchup, soy, maple, sugar, rice wine, apple sauce, cornflour and a dash of water )around 2-3 tbsp) and stir on a low heat.

  3. Fry your tofu in a few tbsp of vegetable oil until all covered for a minute, turning regularly. The heat should be medium-high.

  4. Add in your sauce mix to the tofu and cook until the sauce starts to turn syrupy. At this point, add in your orange juice and stir for 30 seconds or so. Be careful or splattering.

  5. Sprinkle with Sesame seeds if you like and serve with rice (or enjoy on it’s own).
